Sport Psychology

Sport Psychology provides athletes the psychological tools to maximize their physical skills. In the early stages of athletic development, vast differences in physical skill often determine who wins and loses. As athletes progress further towards the college and professional ranks the skill differential between competitors shrinks, or is eliminated altogether. With the exception of a few rare athletes who redefine their sport, most at the elite levels of sport possess fairly similar levels of talent, with unique strengths and weaknesses. Winning and losing at the level of elite sport is often determined by the individuals and teams who have also mastered psychological skills, or “mental toughness.”

It is not a coincidence that the rare athletes who redefine their sport also possess exceptional psychological skills. Athletes are typically provided countless hours of training perfecting their physical skills and very little (if any) competent training perfecting their psychological skills. Performance enhancement training provides the necessary skills to athletes, coaches and teams to win championships. Some of these sport psychology skills include: goal setting, self-talk, practicing with purpose, visualization, concentration, focus, discipline, competition planning and evaluation, dealing with adversity, and recovering from injury.
